Het recente werk van is een beeldend onderzoek naar het spanningsveld tussen autonoom design en massaproductie. Raat richt zijn onderzoek op het moment waarop een modernistisch beeldtaal van een oorspronkelijk kleine groep van avant-garde kunstenaars, wordt omarmd door 'de massa' en vervolgens niet langer experimenteel of vernieuwend is, maar juist conventioneel en huiselijk. In de tentoonstelling worden bestaande objecten uit hun alledaagse en huishoudelijke sfeer geplaatst en getransformeerd tot een autonoom (kunst)object. - Reminiscing the format of a catalogue Archetypes and Residues documents such ordinary objects as chairs, doors, mirrors and table frames repurposed by artist Thomas Raat some of which retain their original formal states, while others are intentionally recreated. It reflects upon Raat's sculptural practice, in the two-dimensionality of the printed page, and the space within printed matter.
