Walead Beshty reviews Under the Big Black Sun: California Art 1974-1981 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Anne Ellegood appraises State of Mind: New California Art Circa 1970 at the Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach; Mark Godfrey considers Phenomenal: California Light, Space, Surface at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; and Rita Gonzalez takes stock of Now Dig This! Art and Black Los Angeles 1960-1980 at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.
