Its founder, Karst Meijer, affectionately refers to it as a sanctuary for botanical heritage. Herbaria play a crucial role in preserving botanical specimens for scientific study and conservation. Since 2019, Herbarium Frisicum has been custodian to the world's largest collection of Solanaceae (Nightshade family), which includes the tomato.
