OUR PUBLICATIONS

The Van Abbemuseum’s publication programme has three main categories:

1. Van Abbemuseum Public Research (VAMPR)

These publications report the actions and findings of studies that the Van Abbemuseum conducts using the resources of its archives, collection and library. The Van Abbemuseum has published several books with writings by leading figures of the museum world since 1945. The first in this series is a monograph on Jerzy Ludwinski, a Polish art historian, curator and critic who has made several fascination proposals for new museums. The research publications also include co-productions such as Mögliche Museen (Possible Museums) about ten museum of the future which the Van Abbemuseum published together with Buchhandlung Walther König.

2. Monographs

These publications provide background information on one or more artists who have featured in Van Abbemuseum exhibitions, and whose work has in some cases been purchased for the collection. The museum offers the monographs as a platform for artists to present a wider or more specific picture of their artistic outlook. The series already includes monographs on the work of Yael Bartana, Avi Mograbi and Wilhelm Sasnal, and a monograph on Minerva Cuevas is currently in production. A catalogue raisonné of Ian Wilson’s discussions has also been published in this series.

3. Catalogues

This category consists of the books conventionally published to accompany an exhibition or specific project. The catalogues normally go further than purely a report on the exhibition, and present an opportunity to take a wider look at the subject matter. Publications in this category include Academy, Forms of Resistance and Be[com]ing Dutch.
