The Van Abbemuseum is a place where you can enjoy noteworthy exhibitions and exciting works of art. But there is more. You can apply to take part in our courses and theme sessions. These take place in the museum, of course, so you will be enjoy appreciating modern and contemporary art and the museum’s collection at the same time. Our courses are fun, educational and will enrich your understanding of art. Participation is limited, so don’t hesitate to sign up!

Art history Course

Modern Art History Course: 1900-1950

In Dutch only.Our course on the art history of the first half of the twentieth century will introduce you to such artists as Kandinsky, Picasso and Duchamp, who were central to the development of modern art in that period. It will then take you on to postwar developments such as Cobra, Abstract Expressionism and Hard Edge.

Modern Art History Course: from 1950

In Dutch only. The ten sessions of the second course go more deeply into artistic movements from 1950 onwards, taking you by way of Pop Art, performance, installation and video. Again, you will be visiting the museum where you can simultaneously make better acquaintance with modern art and the Van Abbemuseum’s collection.

Theme Lectures

Theme Lectures - Fall 2009

In Dutch only. This fall the four Theme Lectures will have one work from our collection as subject. Every work will be looked at in depth by searching for interesting relationships and different meanings.

The maximum number of participants per Theme Session is 25, and the costs are EUR 15 per session. Please pay the course fee at the ticket desk before the session starts. You will receive a sticker as a token of participation.

Workshop Art appreciation

Workshop Art Appreciation ‘Is Kunst Zinnig?’

In Dutch only. You will wander through the galleries, learning to approach art from different angles. Starting from what we perceive, the course considers the cultural and social context of the work of art, the artist and your own relation to the work. It is important to take an active part in the workshop because this will help you learn to look at, describe and interpret art, and then to form a standpoint and debate it. The course involves looking and discussing not only works of art, but also related texts, poems, film, music etc.

Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 17:00. The museum is closed on Monday, with the exception of public holidays. The museum is closed on New Year's Day, Christmas Day and Queens Day. The Van Abbemuseum is open until 21:00 on Thursday evenings, admission to the museum is free from 17:00 on those nights. The museum cafe is also open until 21:00 on Thursday evenings.
