John Baldessari

video works 1970-1977

18/02/2012 - 28/04/2013

In the tower 23 video works from the Van Abbe collection by American artist John Baldessari (1931) are on display. Baldessari lives and works in Los Angeles, California. He belongs to the first generation of artists that, in the late 60s, worked with video as a primary medium. The arrival of the portable video camera provided artists with unknown new creative possibilities.

These early works reference the film industry and popular media such as television, magazines and newspapers whilst playfully analysing the relationship between word and image. Combining simple, recognisable subject matter in surprising ways Baldessari subtly alters our understanding of what we see.

This presentation was realised with the support of BankGiro Loterij.
