If I Can't Dance... Edition III - Masquerade: From Dusk Till Dawn

Play Van Abbe

09/03/2010 - 21/03/2010
Location: Van Abbemuseum

The closing act of Play Van Abbe - Part 1 will be performed by the curatorial platform If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part of Your Revolution. From 9 until 21 March 2010 they will present the project Edition III - Masquerade at the Van Abbemuseum, simultaneously concluding their long term project Masquerade with this fourth and final episode. Serving as an ‘interruption’ into the programme of Play Van Abbe, Edition III - Masquerade temporarily interrupts the exhibitions regime with a presentation by six invited artists:Keren Cytter, Suchan Kinoshita, Joachim Koester, Peggy Phelan, Suely Rolnik and Lars Bang Larsen. Edition III - Masquerade will culminate in a performance event , From Dusk Till Dawn, from Friday 19 March until Saturday 20 March 2010.

The international If I Can’t Dance... platform will be taking over the ‘Oudbouw’ of the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven for the entire evening, night and morning of Friday 19 March to Saturday 20 March. For eighteen hours the Van Abbemuseum’s director Charles Esche is transferring the museum’s management to the international If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution platform.

From sunset to sunrise
From dusk Till Dawn is taking Masquerade as its theme and includes an exhibition, a performance programme and a series of lectures by twenty internationally renowned artists and thinkers. The programme also includes the presentation of (Mis)reading Masquerade, a publication that gives an impression of the presentations of If I Can’t Dance..in the past two years.

The museum itself will be activated as a ‘stage’: the stately museum galleries will provide the backdrop for a diversity of performances. All the visitors will be encouraged to participate actively, to step into a new museological world. Because the programme runs from sunset to sunrise, the perception and experience of the museum will also be completely different: bright daylight will turn to twilight and darkness, making an appeal to all the senses. This radically different way of handling a museum is wholly in line with the intentions of From Dusk Till Dawn. The visitors will be presented with a new programme component every hour.

If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part of Your Revolution
The nomadic platform If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution has been organizing artists’ productions, meetings and presentations at guest institutions since 2005, sometimes by invitation only and at other times open to the public. If I Can’t Dance... concentrates on the investigation and development of performance in all its diversity within contemporary art. In conjunction with artists the organization devises projects that are staged on a diversity of international platforms and in museums. With Amsterdam as its base, If I Can’t Dance... leads a nomadic existence, organizing public events from Bilbao to Berlin and from New York to Gdansk.
